GLOSSARY
Bearer, spacer,
runner
(entretoise): Component on which the top deck pieces bear or
separates the top and bottom decks and provides space for the entry
of lifting devices; includes stringers, blocks, and block and stringerboard
combinations
Block (bloc, dé): Rectangular, square, multisided, or
cylindrical deck spacer, often specified by width followed by height
and length.
Chamfer (chanfrein): Bevel on one or two faces of deckboards,
either along the full or specified length of board or between the
stringers of blocks, allowing easier entry of pallet jack wheels.
Deckboard (planche): Element or component of pallet
top and bottom, perpendicular to stringers or stringerboards, often
specified by thickness followed by width and length.
Notch (arcade, entaille): Cutout in lower portion of
stringer to allow entry for the fork tine.
Overall height (hauteur de palette): The vertical distance
measured from the floor to the top side of the top deck.
Pallet (palette): A portable, horizontal, rigid platform
used as a base for assembling, storing, stacking, handling and transporting
goods as a unit load.
Pallet length (longueur de palette): Pallet dimension
between the extreme pallet ends, parallel to the stringers or top
stringerboards; also refers to the first dimension given to describe
a pallet i.e. 48" x 40", where 48" is the pallet stringer/stringerboard
length.
Pallet width (largeur de palette): Pallet dimension
between the extreme pallet sides, parallel to and corresponding to
the length of top deckboards.
Pallet size (dimension d'une palette): Pallet dimension
specified by stringer or stringerboard length, followed by top deckboard
length and bottom deckboard length (if necessary).
Stringer (Longeron, longrine, travers): Continuous,
longitudinal, solid, built-up, or notched beam component of pallet,
supporting and spacing deck components, often specified by width followed
by height and length.
Stringerboard (Planche longeron, traverse): Continuous,
solid member extending the full length of the pallet, perpendicular
to deckboard members and placed between deckboards and blocks.
Wing (aile): The distance the deck (top, top and bottom)
extends from the outer edge of the stringer or block.
